Be You

Good Morning

Today on the blog I am sharing a mixed media canvas that I created using one of the papers from the January Crop Kit.

From the piece of scrapbooking paper I fussy cut the circles, then using dimension tape I created the three layered circles.

To start the canvas I covered it with a layer of gesso creating texture as I went, no that you can actually see it in the finished photo.

The next step is to add even more texture, find a stencil and your texture paste then go.

To add colour to the background I used dylusion sprays white linen and vibrant turquoise and water.

I made sure that I dried the sprays completely and then activate them again with water. While the water was wet I rolled my roll of paper towel over the top to remove some of the colour and create this mottle effect.

Once the canvas was completely dry I drew on my stems and leaves and added the words.

I am always excited and on tender hooks to see what I receive in my design team package. This time the box contained the January Mixed Media Kit. Yikes was my first response, that means I have to write instructions that you all will understand. I put that though aside and starting pulling out the kit and oh my, it is packed full of goodies.

I decided to create an Art Journal page.

Ice Layers

Hello Everyone,
its Deena here on the blog today and I have something a little different. In my latest design team package I received the Ice Layers from Faber-Castell. I wasn't really sure what to do with them so I watched a Faber-Castell youtube video where they used gelatos. Well I decided to experiment a little and I also used Scribble Sticks and Magicals.

I haven't completed a finished design it was more of a road test to see what I could use and do. I started out with 4 pieces of thick watercolour page which I covered with a layer of gesso.

I always use circles but today and decided to go with the middle design in the above top photo which is called Geode. Now the ice layers, are a sticky rubbery stencil/embellishment. They can be used as a stencil that sticks to your surface and can be removed or you can leave it as part of your design.

For my first test I used my magicals. I laid the complete sheet over my paper and then sprinkled my magicals over the top.

I sprayed water over the surface to activate the colours, I then picked up the excess water by rolling my roll of paper towel over the top. Once I had removed the excess water I gentle pulled of the ice layer as I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to. Success it worked and it didn't rip my paper. When the ice layer was removed I then dried the wet surface of my paper with a heat gun.

Next I used my scribble sticks, some of the colour from the magicals did stay on the ice layer and it did transfer to my paper, but that's ok as its part of what I am testing. I laid the ice layer over the top of my watercolour paper and chose 3 different scribble sticks to colour in the shapes. Once all the shapes were coloured in I wet my paint brush and added water to the surface of my paper and ice layer. I was a little concerned as I started to pull this one up but it did up completely up and did not tear.

This last time I did things a little different, with my gelatos I coloured my watercolour paper and then I laid the ice layer over the top. I did not remove the ice layer but cut it down to size and then with a baby wipe removed the colour within the exposed shapes.

I really enjoy playing with new products and this one was no exception. I still have the other two to play with so who knows when you will see them in future design team work.

Little Lindy Try-Me Kit

Hello

Today I want to share with you a canvas tutorial and how I used Little Lindy Try-Me Kit from Lindy's Stamp Gang. Included in the pack was a Magical - tiffanylou's blu, 2 starbursts - crème brulee cream and tiffanylou blue and a moon shadow mist - van dyke sepia. Lindy's products have to been one of my favourite things to use. Just a tip to remember, they are water reactive so what every wet substance you use over the top of them it will react with the lindy's product.

This is what I created

I started off with a canvas that I found in my stash, the dimensions are 15.5 x 15.5 cm by 3.5 cm in height. Then using gesso I put a really, really thick layer of it all over my canvas (including the sides). This layer is not smooth by any means. I love texture and I was getting texture even if it took days to dry. Before it did dry I found some thread, not actually sure what it was, again just in my stash and wrapped it around and around and around my canvas in all directions, make sure that I pulled it tight so it was embedded into the gesso. The thread was not going anywhere but once the gesso was dry I tied off the two ends. To incorporate the thread a little bit more I put more gesso over the string so that it didn't look like it was just sitting there.

Here is a close up view

I have to admit this canvas has been sitting on my desk in this unfinished state since January. Yes you read that right. Way back in January I had this great idea of creating a canvas this way, so I did. Then it just didn't work the way I wanted it too. It wasn't until I got my design team package from Kylie and I saw what was in it that a new idea started to form and one that I knew was going to work.

The next step in creating the canvas was adding the colour

This close up shows the shimmer, it looks so different from above but this was sitting in full sunlight streaming through my window This gold shimmer came from the crème burlee cream so pretty.

I decided that I had lost some of the dimension and I needed to get that back. With my palette knife I added white gesso to the top of the thread adding dimension and contrast.

Finally I am happy with the canvas now I needed to work on the embellishments. I am using chipboard that was in my design team package and I decided to heat emboss it. When I am heat embossing chipboard I always do the process twice because it give a much nicer finish, the photos below show the difference between one coat (first photo) and two coats (second photo)

I glued the chipboard to my canvas and added the little quote down the bottom and it was finished.

Patina Effect Paste

Hello,
Deena here today and I am going to share a tutorial with you.

Have you used the Patina Effect Paste by Finnabair? I hadn't either until I got to play with it for this tutorial, although I had been eyeing it off. I did actually watch a couple of youtube videos to see how it was applied and what order the three different mediums. After watching them I ended up applying them the way Finnabair did it as it didn't really seem to matter, brass, then the mint-green and blue together. Make sure that before you add the mint-green and blue that the brass is completely dry as they turn ugly if you don't. I am not sure that I needed to put the brass first but that's ok.

I will show you the finished canvas and then share with you my steps.

The substrate I used is a canvas board which I covered in a layer of gesso. Once the gesso was dry I used texture paste and a stencil to get my canvas started. While the texture paste was still wet I push my chipboard (which I painted with gesso earlier) into the paste. I wasn't sure if this would hold so I did put some glue on the back. I let that dry natural as I didn't want the chipboard to warp from the heat of my heat gun.

On the edges of my canvas I did not want my stencil to be perfect so with my palette knife I gently spread the texture paste out.

Using another stencil and texture paste I add some more texture this time adding it not only to my canvas but also the chipboard.

Next was the stamping, I didn't want the stamping to be the focal point but just another layer in my process. I also added the chipboard frame, sewing cotton and flowers. The stamping seems over the top but you wont see much of it after the next step. I also added the heart shaped chipboard.

In this next step I added gesso over the top of my canvas to send the stamping into the background and also to turn the chipboard frame and heart from brown to white. While this was still wet I went crazy with my white crackle paste. I just love texture and needed more.
As you can see the stamping has almost disappeared completely but it is showing through in some places.

Below are some close up photos of the dry crackle paste.

The final step in creating my canvas was using the patina effect paste

Life

Hello,

Its Deena here today sharing my process on an art journal page that I created just recently for the current challenge we have running in the Shop and Crop Scrapbooking Facebook page.

Here is the mood board, so much inspiration, it was hard to choose where to go.

I had fun with this process and I loved the way the background turned out.

I wanted to use the whole of the stencil so I place my watercolour paper on my mat and then placed the stencil where I wanted it. Then using painters tape I taped down the stencil close to the edge of my paper. This not only kept the stencil in place but also my paper.
Here is the fully stencilled page.

Next I added colour. I had certainly colours that I wanted to use so I put the colour on my mat and then added it with a paint brush. First I sprayed my page with water so that once I added the colour it would run in all directions. I kept my page gently wet, so that the colours would keep mixing together when they got close. Once I was happy with the colours I dried them off with my heat gun.

Close ups

To add another layer to my page I did some stamping, it is very light. Between inking my stamp and stamping it onto my art journal I stamped on a scrap of paper first to take some of the ink away.

My next step was too splash some pink onto the page, the same pink you saw on the butterflies and quote in the first photo of my post. The funny thing is that on the purple and blue once dried it was a silver shimmer. Not what I was expecting but all ok.

Close up view

Once my page was completely dried I added the quote which I typed and printed from the computer, punched the butterflies from a piece of tissue paper and then colour all of them.

Would love to see what you create so please follow the link above to our facebook group.
